Disciplinary Proceeding

A disciplinary proceeding is a hearing conducted by a state licensing agency or other regulatory body to determine whether a person is guilty of professional misconduct and if so, what the penalty should be. For example, disbarment (taking away an attorney's right to practice law) is one of the penalties that can be handed down to an attorney charged with professional misconduct during a state bar disciplinary proceeding.
