Ex Parte
Ex parte describes a court action taken by only one party who does not give an opponent notice or an opportunity to be heard. For example, when the state makes a request for a search warrant or a child protection order it is ex parte, since the person who will be affected by the action is not present in court when it is happening. Ex parte is Latin for “from a party.”
