Eyewitness Identification
An eyewitness is a person who has personally observed an event. Eyewitness identification is a type of evidence offered by someone who has personally observed an event and is testifying as to the person or persons involved from his or her own memory of the event. Eyewitness identification of defendants is the primary cause of wrongful conviction in the U.S. Even though eyewitness identification is unreliable, it is very convincing to jurors.
