An Appellant is the person who asks the appellate court to review a case by a lower court. For example, if a jury renders a guilty verdict in a murder case against Frank and Frank then files an appeal because he thinks that his confession was not admissible evidence, in the appellate court case, Frank will be referred to as an Appellant instead of a Defendant.
