Cold Hit

A cold hit is an identification of a suspect though scientific analysis of evidence from the crime scene when no suspects had been previously identified. For example, if samples were taken from under the fingernails of the murder victim and DNA from the samples matched that of an individual in a DNA index system, it would be a cold hit.
