Community Service

Community Service is a form of alternative sentencing. Instead of going to jail, participants are required to work in city organizations or perform clean up duties in and around the city without compensation. For example, if a defendant is charged with simple assault with no priors, his lawyer would probably be able to convince the judge to sentence him to community service and probation, instead of jail.
