Visiting Procedures

Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall is located in Downey, California. It is one of three juvenile detention centers operated by the Los Angeles County Probation Department that temporarily house minors ranging in age from 8 to 18 who have pending court cases. On average, Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall houses approximately 330 to 400 minors at any given time.

Parents, grandparents, or legal guardians may visit minors at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall. Siblings and other family members may also be permitted to visit a minor upon request and approval of the judge handling the minor’s case. If you wish to make a request to visit a minor in Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, get in contact with the minor’s unit supervisor or probation officer.

It is recommended that attorneys visit minors between 7:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M., although they are permitted to visit at any time. Clergy members must obtain an order from a judge before they can be granted visitation.

After the judge adjudicates the minor’s case, the minor will either be released back into the custody of their parents, placed in foster care, or sent to the California Youth Authority (CYA) or a Los Angeles County juvenile camp.

Booking Information

Only the parents or legal guardians of detained minors are able to obtain booking information on the minor.

Visiting Hours

Approved visitors may visit minors at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall on weekends. Saturday visitation hours are from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. Visitation hours on Sunday are from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Visitors may stay for the entire visitation period.

Visits are also allowed on days when a minor returns from court through 7:00 P.M. or between the hours of 5:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. Contact Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall for more information on visitation.

Visitors' Restrictions

Visitors to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall must adhere to a strict dress code. Visitors are not permitted to wear sexually revealing clothing, clothing containing the names of sports teams, or colors affiliated with gangs. Tattoos must be covered; if your visible tattoos cannot be covered, contact Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall to arrange for an isolated visiting location. Officers recommend that visitors wear long pants and bring in their photo ID and no more than two keys on a key ring. Only visitors with a valid photo ID will be allowed to visit minors. Acceptable forms of identification include a valid driver’s license (any state) a valid California ID card, a valid passport or visa, a U.S. military ID card, an alien registration card, a permanent resident card, a Mexican consulate card, or any other valid U.S. government ID card. For minor visitors over the age of 12, a valid birth certificate of school ID card is acceptable.

Purses, cell phones, pens, and a long list of other items may not be brought into the visiting areas.

Bail

Minors who have been charged with crimes in California generally are not eligible for bail. After being arrested by police, minors will either be released back to their parents or remain in juvenile detention until their arraignment. The minor will remain in the custody of the juvenile detention center throughout the duration of their case unless the judge decides that it is acceptable to release the minor back into his or her parents’ custody until the case is resolved.

Telephone Access & Mail

Minors at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall are permitted to make telephone calls, but they are not permitted to receive incoming calls.

Minors may receive mail at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall. Minors may be sent cards, letters, and softcover books. Minors may also receive photos as long as they do not contain sexual or violent content or gang-related images.

Personal Property

A minor’s personal property, with the exception of cell phones and related items, cannot be picked up by a parent or guardian until after his or her sentencing. If you wish to pick up a minor’s property, you must present a valid photo ID.

If you need to obtain the release of a minor’s vehicle, you can obtain the name of the towing company you will need to contact from the arresting agency. To obtain a car key that was in the minor’s possession when he or she was arrested, contact Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall.
