Ex Post Facto Law

Ex post facto is Latin for “after the fact”. An ex post facto law is a law that imposes criminal liability for acts that were not criminal at the time committed. The U.S. Constitution prohibits both the federal and state governments from enacting ex post facto criminal laws on the principle that it is not right to punish an act which was not illegal when committed.
