Deterrence

Deterrence is the process of discouraging particular behaviors, especially by using fear as a motivating force. For example, a goal of criminal law is to prevent criminal behavior through the fear of punishment. General deterrence is punishment that dissuades the general public from committing a particular crime. Specific deterrence is adjusting a sentence to deter a specific individual from re-offending.
