Bifurcate

To bifurcate is to split in two. When a trial is split into different parts based on the issues involved, it is referred to as a bifurcated trial. Sometimes in criminal trials, the issues of guilt and penalty or guilt and sanity are often bifurcated. A bifurcated trial is also referred to as a two-stage trial.
