But For Cause

But–For Cause refers to an action or cause without which the event would not have occurred. In a determination of causation, the prosecution is required to show that “but for” the defendant's actions, the harmful result would not have occurred. But-For Cause is also referred to as “Actual Cause” and “Cause In Fact.”
