Arrest

An arrest is any significant deprivation of a person's freedom, especially when a person is taken into custody for the purpose of bringing him or her to a police station and charging him or her with a crime. In a citizen's arrest, the citizen takes the person into custody with the intention of handing the person over to the police. Arrests that do not happen in the presence of law enforcement are usually accomplished with an arrest warrant. Following an arrest, the arresting officer prepares an arrest report, which describes the circumstances surrounding the arrest. See also, Arrest Report, Arrest Warrant.
