Allege

To allege is to assert something without giving proof. An allegation is an unproven contention. When something is asserted as a fact that will be proven at trial it is an alleged fact. For example, if the prosecution has alleged that a certain defendant committed murder, one would say, “the alleged murderer entered the courtroom.” See also, Alleged, Allegation.
